The Silver Spurs Riding Club was created in 1941 with a foundation built upon family values, friendship, and the American tradition. Members of the Club work year-round to make an impact in the community by improving the production of the Silver Spurs Rodeo. Each year, the Silver Spurs Riding Club’s Board of Directors carefully choose and award two hard-working women with the Women’s Lifetime Achievement Award. On the blog, we introduce you to Nina Sue Crowell, one of the recipients for this year’s Women’s Lifetime Achievement Award and a dedicated member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club.
Nina Sue Simmons Crowell was born on October 7, 1936, in Kissimmee, FL to the late Henry Tolle and Ruby Louise Fletcher Simmons. She graduated from Florida State University with a degree in elementary and early childhood education. She later pursued a master’s degree from the University of Central Florida in 1986. While in college, Nina Sue was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She began her teaching career in Osceola County, where she taught for 31 years before teaching in Orange County for four years. Osceola County recognized her teaching efforts in 1980 when they awarded her Teacher of the Year. She also taught in Dayton, Tennessee for two years. She has been a member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club for over 40 years, volunteering her time alongside her late husband, J. Robert Crowell. They worked in the concession stands together for many years before J. Robert had the honor of serving the club as the 1992 Big Boss. Nina Sue was in charge of making the “all the way” sauce for the hamburgers during each performance. Her favorite memories include working with her friends in Connie Partin’s concession stands, being with the children of the Silver Spurs Rodeo and eventually welcoming her three children into the club.
Nina Sue shared that it means a lot to be the Women’s Lifetime Achievement award recipient because the Silver Spurs Rodeo has been a part of her family history for many years. Receiving the award is a major honor because each of the ladies that have been awarded before her were incredibly deserving and she’s proud to stand beside them. Nina Sue is committed to serving her community as she is a member of many organizations including the Junior Service League, Junior Women’s Club, and Philanthropic Educational Organization.
